The Great North Swim is taking place 22-24 June 2012 this year and the organisers have extended the Swim days to Friday/Saturday/Sunday for the first time - the 1/2 mile the 1 mile and the 2 mile have a start point at the Low Wood Marina which is just under a mile from Brockhole (Lake District Visitor Centre) which is located next to White Cross Bay and only a couple of miles from Limefitt Park.

So if you want to make a weekend of it, or bring your friends and family to support you in this great challenge, then consider a holiday lodge to accommodate your visit to the Lake District – comfortable self catering accommodation close to the start.

If you are swimming to raise money for charity then I will deduct one entrance fee from the cost of your stay, which I would ask you to put as sponsorship from me! Good Luck!

Spring into Summer at White Cross Bay & Limefitt Park

Well we've had some cracking weather in the Lake District this year so far – and long may it continue! I thought I'd check in at the Met Office website to see what the weather in June is going to be doing and this is what I found -

'UK Outlook for 9 Jun 2011 to 23 Jun 2011: Rainfall amounts look to be close to or below average for the time of year for most parts of the UK. Sunshine is likely to be above average for the most part and this will help temperatures to achieve above average occasionally, or even well above the average in some parts!'

So it's looking good for June up to now and I may take advantage and book into one of the holiday lodges to ensure I don't miss out on some lovely walks in the sun – not that me and the pests mind the rain (that is after all what makes the Lakes what they are!!) but it will be nice – get some colour in our cheeks with lots of fresh air! We will have to be sticking to the 'Miles without Stiles' routes in the books in the cabins – Jester has arthritis and is lame alot of the time at the moment – which means short, controlled walks over the fells with no stiles that he has to clamber over. Luckily there's a few options for us, but he won't be doing Helvellyn again I don't think

Autumn in the Lake District – by a visitor to Tree Top Lodge, Limefitt Park

Pete and his wife had a week at Tree Top Lodge this time last year – and they are returning for a 10 day break next week! They absoloutely loved it and Pete is a keen photographer and has generously shared some of his views of the Lake District so we can showcase how beautiful an autumnal break with windermerelogcabin.com can be! He has captured the beautiful scenery you can expect to see all around Limefitt Park and White Cross Bay which includes a sunset over Lake Windermere, views of the lake from Bowness on Windermere, I think there's a couple around Coniston and I definitely recognise a couple from around Ambleside! He went up onto the fells to get some particularly atmospheric shots of Lake Windermere and I hope you like them as much as I do ……. roll on our next trip to the Lakes we can't wait!! The Marina on White Cross Bay

As White Cross Bay is a lake side site it has it's own Marina – and although launching charges are applicable to the yachts and boats it doesn't stop you taking kayaks or dinghys on for your own entertainment, if safe to do so – (would always advise life jackets and stay close to the edge for novices!)

It's great to go down there for a picnic too (picnic benches are provided) as you can just watch the world go by and admire the sailing skills of all those lucky enough to have their own boats! The dogs love it too … great for cooling down on a hot day!

The views across the lake are clear and undisturbed and you can spend your time feeding the ducks, waving to the passing lake cruisers or just soaking up the environment!

Walking from White Cross Bay …..

There’s no need to take the car if it’s great views and beautiful scenery you’re after – you can walk straight out of White Cross Bay and turn left towards Ambleside – a few hundred feet along the pathway is a foot path on the other side of the road – follow it up and it takes you out at Troutbeck Village! Keep going along the pathway for a few more hundred yards and you’re at the Brockhole Visitor Centre! It couldn’t be easier and is good for the environment to leave the car at home once in a while You can of course follow the foot path all the way to Ambleside – or turning right out White Cross Bay you can walk directly into Windermere or Bowness on Windermere!

Chester & Millys dog adventures in the Lake District!

Gill and Ian have 2 gorgeous spaniels who love visiting their dog friendly lodge on White Cross Bay – as you can see they have a lot of fun while they’re there and always have something new to do – be it walking on the fells, exploring in the lanes and countryside, or splashing around in the Lake – all of which are very accessible from White Cross Bay.

Dogs are welcome in all of our lodges as we believe that a holiday isn’t a holiday unless all the family are there to enjoy it! There are so many places that are dog friendly in the Lake District – we really notice the difference up there as the pubs around our local area aren’t as welcoming, or you have to sit out in the beer garden – no matter what the weather is like! But around Windermere and Ambleside (and particularly around Limefitt Park) most pubs understand that the Lake District is a dog lovers paradise and welcome them in – they might even have biscuits and always have a bowl of water!

Check on the website ‘dog friendly in the lake district’ for some more information about taking your dog to our holiday lodges, around Windermere, Ambleside and the Lake District in general! This weekend in the Lake District …..

If you’re lucky enough to be in the Lake District this weekend, whether staying in one of our holiday lodges or elsewhere – you are soooooo lucky!!

You have 3 things going on which if I’d known about I would so have booked one of our lodges on White Cross Bay or Limefitt Park – there is the Maryport Blues Festival, the Stavely Real Ale Festival and the big Airshow at Windermere – and I think there’s even a Real Ale festival in Hawkshead too!! I will definitely be booking in for this time next year – but for this year looks like we’ll be missing out ;-(

Helvellyn with the dog …… and no we didn’t do Striding Edge but we did get some ace pics :-)

There are a number of different routes to the peak of Helvellyn and Striding Edge ………… this particular route from Grasmere was very dog friendly – with no stiles and we didn’t need to do the Striding Edge which we felt would be a bit tricky for dogs if they’re not used to it ….. and decided Jester would find it a bit difficult to negotiate. The views of Striding Edge were fantastic last Friday however …. all the way along we were just looking around and soaking up all the beauty the Lake District has to offer …. which is what we do each time we are up there on such a beautiful clear day!

We were dropped off just outside Grasmere and left our car at the Travellers Rest – although buses can be used for this purpose! From White Cross Bay and Limefitt Park you just head towards Ambleside and pick up the A591 towards Grasmere … go past the Travellers Rest and it’s on the right about 3 miles on …. check out your ordnance survey map! It was a fairly steep ascent to start with but that got most of the up hill out of the way in the first hour and a half …. don’t forget to take lots of water (expecially if you’re taking your dog) as there were only about 4 ‘natural’ watering holes – the last one being the Tarn at the foot of Helvellyn on the way back down, which Jester loved and played in for about 20 minutes!

There’s just so much to do whilst holidaying in the Lake District – and staying at one of the lodges gives you the freedom to come and go as you please! And being dog friendly, you don’t have to leave your dog at home and they can have as good a time as you do!
