Autumn in the Lake District – by a visitor to Tree Top Lodge, Limefitt Park

Pete and his wife had a week at Tree Top Lodge this time last year – and they are returning for a 10 day break next week! They absoloutely loved it and Pete is a keen photographer and has generously shared some of his views of the Lake District so we can showcase how beautiful an autumnal break with windermerelogcabin.com can be! He has captured the beautiful scenery you can expect to see all around Limefitt Park and White Cross Bay which includes a sunset over Lake Windermere, views of the lake from Bowness on Windermere, I think there’s a couple around Coniston and I definitely recognise a couple from around Ambleside! He went up onto the fells to get some particularly atmospheric shots of Lake Windermere and I hope you like them as much as I do ……. roll on our next trip to the Lakes we can’t wait!! Glorious weather in the Lake District – walking the dog …..

We were lucky enough to have a couple of days walking in the Lake District last week – making the most of the beautiful weather and fantastic views.

Tuesday saw us parking up in Windermere and walking up Orrest Head and over the farmland to Limefitt Park – then heading through Troutbeck and up onto Wansfell and Wansfell Pike where the views of Limefitt Park give you a really good idea of the location of Tree Top Lodge, one of the holiday lodges advertised on windermerelogcabin.com - it’s removed from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist area whilst still close enough to Windermere and the Lakes to ensure you have good access to many of the local attractions.

You can walk directly from the lodge onto a variety of walks – (this being just one of them which took us about an hour from Limefitt Park itself to get to this viewpoint!) Jester loves it as you can see …. don’t forget to take extra water and a drink dispenser for your dog whilst walking in the Lakes – there are lots of rivers and lakes around but sometimes you can go a good couple of miles with no natural water stops and in the warm weather it’s really important for your dog to stay as cool as possible! We have started freezing a couple of bottles of water so on a hot day it will defrost naturally and inbetween times it can be used as a ‘cool rub’ for you and your dog ….. nothing better on the back of the neck on a hot hike!

A midweek break in self catering accommodation gives you the freedom to come and go as you please …. and out of popular holiday times can provide a quieter time to get away from it all ……… although a week in the lakes gives you more time to explore the lakes, the fells, the attractions, the houses ….. and sample more of the eateries and pubs – many of which are what I would call ‘proper pubs’ offering real ales and a traditional feel! Or finish earlier on a Friday and enjoy 2 whole days in the lake district, late start on Monday – or leave late on Sunday evening and miss the traffic! We think that windermere log cabins offers you the flexibility to manage your time perfectly in the South Lakes and work to your own agenda …. not someone elses!

All change at The Haybarn Inn, Limefitt Park for 2010

Limefitt Park nr Windermere in the Heart of the Lake District is all change for 2010 – not only is the park no longer accepting touring caravans or campers this year for the first time, they have also refurbished the site pub, the Haybarn Inn, and have really brought it into the 21st century. I hardly recognised the place when I walked in & am suitably impressed at the changes made – a log fire has been placed in a cosy corner, proper bar tables and stools have been placed by the bar and along with the sofas and beautifully upholstered dining chairs it has made a real change to whole ambience. Coupled with a nice & friendly management team this is a great improvement to the facilities at Limefitt Park – try it for yourself and let me know what you think – others have assured me the food is good & they serve a nice pint! What more can you ask for at the end of a day exploring the Lake District! It’s only a 4 minute walk from Tree Top Lodge our lake district lodge & although the log cabin is self catering accomodation, it’s always nice to have a night off (or 2) from the cooking! And dogs are welcome so all you dog lovers don’t have to miss out! There is also a beer garden with wonderful views over Wansfell & Troutbeck. Whether you’re having a full week, a midweek break or a long weekend break at Tree Top Lodge don’t miss out on a visit to the Haybarn!

Dog friendly lodges in the Lake district!

After opening Tree Top Lodge (Limefitt Park) and then Calgarth Lodge (White Cross Bay) as dog friendly lodges, we have at last decided to get one of our own!! Jester is a very bouncy, good natured 5 year old German Wirehaired Pointer and he is gorgeous! We ‘rescued’ him rather than getting a puppy and he is going to make a fantastic walking companion for our visits to the Lake District – if we can keep up with him!! He has only had a day visit to the lodge so far but is looking forward to a bit more training so we can have him free running (where appropriate) with a bit more confidence that he won’t chase the sheep, and will actually come back to us every time we ask him!! We think he thought it was a giant dog kennel! Keep up to date with ‘bringing your dog’ as we will be getting some more dog friendly information soon!

Limefitt Park

f Following on from our day out to Ambleside we decided to amble up to Orrest Head, walking from the Haybarn Inn on Limefitt Park, up and over the main path via Hag Wood to Orrest Head, before heading down into Windermere and then straight into Bowness. We had promised Al and Linda a pint in the Hole in th’ Wall and proceeded directly to the promised pub – which is one of the best in Bowness by our reckoning! Then it was time for food – and we decided to try The Albert as we hadn’t eaten there before. Sunday Lunch is served most of the day – and although they’d run out of beef by the time we got there (5.30pm) it turned out to be a real find! We had the 2 course option for £10.95 and the mushrooms followed by the lamb roast were excellent – real value for money and the service couldn’t be faulted! Will definitely be going back there! Although the lodges are self catering it’s always nice to eat out on occasion – and it saves on the washing up!!

Our long weekend at Limefitt Park, Lake District

We went up to Tree Top Lodge last weekend with a couple of friends for the owners party at Limefitt Park – we arrived on the Friday night in darkness and Alan & Linda got up the next morning and were suitably impressed with the views from the lodge – it was a dryish start to the day so we decided to walk over Wansfell and into Ambleside. They had stayed close by a few times and never been in to sample the delights Ambleside had to offer, and had never seen Lake Windermere in its entirety from Wansfell so they had 2 treats in store! The first one being the climb up to the peak of Wansfell! It being self catering at Tree Top Lodge we slightly overindulged the previous evening in the food and accompanying bottle of Shiraz and didn’t set off until about 12 – but were in Ambleside by 4pm after a meander straight out of Limefitt Park, up and over Wansfell with a few stops to admire the many views on offer! We wandered round the many shops (stopping only to buy chocolate) before heading to the nearest tea room for a much needed cuppa! We then ran out of light so had to get a taxi back to Limefitt Park (cost about £12 incase you find yourself in the same predicament!) Then it was quick turnaround to the Haybarn pub which has just last week got a new management team – a really pleasant evening was had – the fire was burning and the food was good – they even had a singer on! What a great day!!!

Striding Edge, Helvellyn

Now this is a walk and a half – it had to be done so we drove the 5 miles or so to Glenridding from Tree Top Lodge (our log cabin at Limefitt Park in the Lake District) one fine day in September – and voila – 7 hours later we were back again having strode the striding edge and seen some of the most amazing views of the Lake District we’ve seen to date! We started off walking on a fairly level terrain – which soon turned into a steeper trail and resulted in clambering up and over the rocks of the edge itself – excellent in the semi nice weather we had but I wouldn’t fancy it in the rain and fog – and to get all that way and not have the fantastic views would be such a shame!!! Returning to the lodge at the end of the day is ace – a nice hot shower, change of clothes (and footwear!!!) then we were sitting out on the patio having a nice relaxing, well earned glass of wine – feet up and planning not to do too much tomorrow!!

Brockhole Lake District Visitor Centre

This is a picture of the view that we had on Saturday whilst having a bite to eat at the very reasonably priced cafe at Brockhole. Had the most huge slice of apple pie and cream which was £2.25 and they do a good variety of snacks, cakes and meals – and a proper clotted cream tea! Yum! The Lake District Visitor Centre (which I think is it’s official title) is about a 10 minute walk from the entrance of White Cross Bay and is roughly a 10 minute drive from Limefitt Park – and it’s free (apart from a parking charge). We were staying at Tree Top Lodge on Limefitt and we walked down via Troutbeck village (you walk up the hill to the post office, turn left and then follow fork to Windermere and turn right at the bottom of the road towards WXB – takes between half hour and an hour dependent on who’s there) – spent a good 3 hours at Brockhole eating, wandering around the beautiful gardens and using up some excess energy at the Adventure Playground! Chris then took his lad swimming at White Cross Bay whilst I attempted to walk off afore mentioned apple pie with a swift walk back to Tree Top Lodge, Limefitt Park to get the car and the kayak – for our next adventure of the day!!

The River Pool at Limefitt Park!

Run away - the witches are coming!!

Limefitt Park has an excellent River Pool where you can have some fun with all the family – right next to the adventure playground you can easily spend an afternoon or even a full day splashing around, fishing for flies, playing in the park and even take your butties with you! The coven descended on the river pool with the kids and dogs in tow – and had hours of ‘we want to stay longer’ – finished off with a game of football! Can you believe they were there for a week and when I asked them if the TV was working (due to the digital changeover) they didn’t know cos they hadn’t switched it on!! Now that’s my type of holiday!!
